A versatile painter, Arthur Schaefer captures Maine in its subtlety and blazing glory — from countryside to ocean side to flora and fauna. Regardless of subject, Art’s work shows dynamic energy with a strong viewpoint.
He paints both en plein air and in his Freeport Studio — his satisfying impressionistic alla prima style is most evident in Maine farm landscapes that feature an expansive capture of light and vista on relatively small canvas. Maine’s seasides come to life with dynamic coastal vistas of ocean, homesteads, boats a-sail or in dry dock. Personality-driven animals reside on canvasses large and small — beloved pets, livestock and especially Maine wildlife. Flowers painted in a fine art detail round out the portfolio of this passionate, versatile painter.
Art studies regularly with artist Diane Dahlke and others at MECA in a variety of media. He has attended workshops with noted landscape painters including Colin Page, Bjorn and Tollif Runquist, West Coast Impressionist John Crosby and others.
His work is featured in shows ranging from the University of New England, Freeport Public Library, Aldermere Farm,Yarmouth Art Festival, Yarmouth Historical Society, Merrymeeting Center, Yarmouth Library, 511 Congress Street (Portland), River Arts Gallery (Damariscotta), local businesses, and other venues.
